Starting this week (as of January 1st), Starfleet Command has designated Enterprise Station (and, by default, Gamma Station) as one of the locations that will test a new personnel communicator. For the next six months, instead of the standard insignia combadge, all Starfleet crew will wear a unique wrist communicator, similar in appearance to a digital wristwatch. This new wrist device features the standard communication operations of a combadge, as well as time-keeping, personal health monitoring, an array of easy-access data options, the ability to uplink to nearby tricorders, and limited short-distance scanning capabilities. It is part of Starfleet’s greater initiative to streamline mission options, and bring increased efficiency to the tools available to individual officers and crew.
If this six-month test is deemed a success, these wrist devices could become a standard part of duty operations. If they don’t pass the testing period, all crew will likely return to insignia combadges.
