From Pips to Pins

Last week, we were informed of a change to the Starfleet uniform code, which goes into effect – for us – this week. Starfleet Command has chosen to remove the iconic rank pips on the collar of all unforms, and replace them with solid enclosed rank pins, located above the combadge (above the uniform color divide), on the left breast. They stated this change to be a matter of practicality and efficiency.

Truth be told, the efficiency of rank pips has been a struggle ever since the current uniforms entered use in 2361. There have been complaints of pips not fastening securely to uniforms, pips falling off the collar during rigorous activities, and most of all, frustration with the behind-the-collar fasteners causing discomfort, and digging into the skin of the neck. In August, Starfleet Command finally took action, and decided to resolve these issues.

Last week, a commship arrived at Enterprise Station, bringing specifications for replicating the new rank pins, and this week, our department heads have the task of ensuring that all personnel under their command make the switch. After this week, collar rank pips will be a thing of the past, and more durable rank pins will become the norm.

This change is relatively minor, but it does reflect a long military tradition of earned medals and ribbons being worn on the left breast. Rank is earned, so it makes sense for the new rank pins to be displayed – prominently – in their new location as well.
