This wormhole was discovered, earlier today, by Commander Benjamin Sisko, and his new DS9 chief science officer, Lieutenant Jadzia Dax, while both officers were on a science mission into the Denorios Belt. While inadvertently traveling through the wormhole, Commander Sisko also claims to have interacted with extra-dimensional beings whom the Bajoran people refer to as their “Celestial Prophets”. The dominant Bajoran religion believes these entities to be their long-worshipped gods. As a result of this discovery, Kai Opaka, the leader of Bajor’s dominant faith, has already begun referring to Commander Sisko as Bajor’s “Emissary to the Prophets”.
After news of this wormhole reached Bajor, Major Kira Nerys, the Bajoran attache aboard DS9, requested that the USS Enterprise-D undock from DS9, head into the Denorios Belt, and take up a position at the Bajoran terminus of the wormhole. Bajor does not have the defensive assets to effectively enforce a claim to this wormhole, so the Enterprise-D will do so for them until a better option can be put into place. An idea was presented that might relocate DS9 to the wormhole, however, this massive former ore processing station does not have propulsion capabilities, and cannot move as a starship moves. At present, the USS Enterprise-D is the only local defensive asset capable of relocating.
So, here we are… parked at the mouth of a newly-discovered wormhole, defending Bajor’s claim to what will, most certainly, become a major strategic asset for the Bajoran people. I can only image the frustration that will be felt on Cardassia, once news of this discovery reaches them. Their abandonment of the Bajor System, after 40 years of brutal occupation, was an agreement they made with Federation negotiators. Now that the Bajorans are free, Bajor just gained the most valuable piece of real estate in the Alpha Quadrant!
