Last week, while the Enterprise was on its final shakedown deployment just outside the Sol System, one of the tests we conducted was a series of saucer separation maneuvers. The Galaxy-class is the only Starfleet ship that can conduct a separation like this. Even its sister class, the Nebula-class, does not share this feature. Since this is a relatively new concept in starships (only the three other Galaxy-class ships, already in service, can separate), I thought you might like see what the Enterprise looks like, without its saucer.
This photo was taken from the Enterprise saucer section as it was coming around for reintegration during one of those tests. The ship looks oddly “stunted” without its iconic saucer.
